Semantics and Pragmatics of Locative Expressions

چکیده

The paper examines locative expressions and shows that on adequate account of their meaning must be based on two essential understandings: First, the simple spatial relation, often given OS the meaning of the spatial prepositions, is only an “ideal” from which there ore deviations in context: second, a level of “geometric conceptualization” mediates between “the world OS it is” and longuoge. Pragmatic “near principles” are formulated to explain some deviations from the ideal and several other apparent irregularities of prepositional use. A set of “use types” of the ideal meaning is proposed to account for conventionol aspects of locative meaning. The paper concludes with o discussion of the consequences of this description of locative expressions for artificial intelligence and linguistics.

Syntax-semantics mapping of locative arguments

This paper proposes a syntax-semantics correspondence of locative expressions: This proposal is based on the syntactic hierarchy among three locative structures (PPs, VPs, and verbal affixes) and the semantic hierarchy among four locative arguments (Goal, Source, Symmetric Path, Stative Location). As for the syntactic hierarchy, the verbal affixes are closer to the head verb than the locative/p...

Reference to Locations

I.I Sketch of Proposal We propose a semantics for locative expressions such as near Jones or west of Denver, an important subsystem for NLP applications. Locative expressions denote regions of space, and serve as arguments to predicates, locating objects and events spatially. Since simple locatives occupy argument positions, they do NOT participate in scope ambiguities m pace one common view, w...

Statement of Research Interests

My recent and ongoing research is focused on the interpretation of referring expressions (e.g. she, Rosa, that woman, the woman we talked about yesterday) as a window on the semantics-pragmatics interface. Referring expressions have attracted a great deal of interest in fields concerned with linguistic meaning, including semantics, psycholinguistics, and the philosophy of language, because they...

The first part of the paper is more philosophical in nature and discusses what is meaning...
